Becoming an Associate Banker

Working at a bank taught me nothing but determination. I recently moved into a new state in Kentucky with my family. I was a new customer who needed a bank account. I went in to create a new bank account and came out with a job. Isn't life so funny? The past two great years have exposed me to many different cultures like Derby Day, Nature's Parks, Bourbon, and so much more. All I knew was Cafe Cubano, Salsa, and the beach.

I have learned many things professionally too. I learned to manage different emotions, learned how to excel in my position, learned how to network, and learned how to expose my wants and needs. Let me tell you, it wasn't easy.

Becoming an associate banker meant to service and help those in need. It meant reaching out and sharing how to make a finance lifestyle easy and better. It did not matter what income grade level you were in neither race, sex, color, all of it. I found passion in helping others and still do.  It gave me the privilege of meeting other entrepreneurs, parents teaching their kids about finance, the stories of their loved ones who passed, and my co-workers who are just as ambitious as me.

I was able to do many things beyond my position when I first started. I was asked to be the branch's Culture Champion Lead and I'm glad I did. Culture Champion meant more than just sharing what's going on within our company.

It meant to:

  • Share up-to-date events

  • Encourage my team to volunteer for community events

  • Create artboards of team members and participate in branch activities

  • Reach out to each individual to learn more about ourselves

  • Post trivia questions about our team or the company

and the list goes on...

Being a culture champion was a little lonely, to begin with. Mind you, I had just moved to Kentucky and I knew nothing about networking. Because of this opportunity, I was able to open my wings and fly. It provided me with more opportunities to become a Marketing Lead for a Hispanic/Latino Chapter in the state of Kentucky.

It taught me to:

  • Brainstorm ideas within our Chapter teams

  • Manage and learn marketing skills such as e-mailing, flyers, word of mouth...

  • Attend and host local events to represent our Hispanic/Latino Chapter alongside supporting other Chapters from different states

  • Attending monthly meetings with our directors and co-chairs

and so much more...

Being an Associate Banker was more than just handling cash or providing account maintenance. It's exposing yourself to new skills and potential opportunities you can accomplish. Because of this, I can now apply these skills to my future career and continue to expose myself as I go.
